MPA to Award Six Scholarships For 2001

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will be awarding a total of six scholarships for 2001. The awards will be presented by Associate Professor Yaacob Ibrahim, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on 5 July 2001 at 12.00pm.

A total of three overseas and three local scholarships will be awarded. The overseas scholars are namely, Ms Ong Pui Hoon, Ms Farrah binte Mohd Fadil, and Mr Chia Yujin. Ms Ong and Ms Fadil will read Economics at the University of Chicago, and the University College London, respectively. Mr Chia will further his studies in Marine Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The three local scholarships will be awarded to Ms Cheryl Tsao, Mr Lim Guan Teck and Mr Ng Yi Han. All three will be studying at the National University of Singapore. Ms Tsao will take up Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mr Lim will read Chemical Engineering while Mr Ng will study Computer Engineering.

Established in 1996, the MPA Scholarship Programme aims to attract top talents to help fulfil MPA's mission of developing and promoting Singapore as a premier global hub port and international maritime centre, and in safeguarding Singapore's strategic maritime interests. To date, the MPA has awarded a total of 22 scholarships.

MPA Scholars 2001

Ms Ong Pui Hoon
Hwa Chong Junior College (1999 - 2000)
Methodist Girls' School (1995 - 1998)

A former recipient of the Humanities Scholarship awarded by the Singapore Government, Ms Ong Pui Hoon participated in a variety of activities in schools, illustrating how much of an all-rounder she was. She was a member of her school's String Ensemble, the Geography Society and the Badminton Club. In addition, Ms Ong has a caring heart for the less privileged. She took part in a project, which required her to assist in building and repairing schools in Myanmar.

Ms Ong will study Economics at the University of Chicago.

Ms Farrah Binte Mohd Fadil
Raffles Junior College (1999 - 2000)
Raffles Girls' Secondary School (1995 - 1998)

Ms Farrah Binte Mohd Fadil, a former Gifted Education Programme student, has no doubt developed sound academic acumen. She received numerous academic awards like the Prime Minister's Book Prize and the Mendaki Scholarship. Besides excelling academically, Ms Fadil was also an active member of her school's Air Rifle team. She served as the captain of her team and took part in many Air Rifle competitions, winning many medals for her alma maters.

Ms Fadil will be studying Economics at the University College London.

Mr Chia Yujin
Singapore Polytechnic (1997 - 2000)
Ang Mo Kio Secondary School (1993 - 1996)

Mr Chia Yujin, a top student at the Singapore Polytechnic, has a deep interest in Marine Engineering. He upgraded himself through attending many related courses. Furthermore, he gained work experience as a Marine Engineer through working onboard the vessels. Besides pursuing his interest in Marine Engineering, he was also an active member of the National Cadet Corps.

Mr Chia will further his studies in Marine Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Ms Tsao Chieh Lin, Cheryl
Raffles Junior College (1999 - 2000)
Raffles Girls' Secondary School (1995 - 1998)

Ms Cheryl Tsao, a former Gifted Education Programme student, has an immense passion for web design, which saw her taking part in various national web design competitions. Also, a highly motivated individual, Ms Tsao completed an Advance Placement level course in Electricity and Magnetism at the National University of Singapore.

Ms Tsao will be doing Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the same university.

Mr Lim Guan Teck
Hwa Chong Junior College (1997 - 1998)
The Chinese High School (1993 - 1996)

An active sportsman, Mr Lim Guan Teck participated in various outdoor games. Some of the sports he plays are badminton, swimming and water-polo. Besides sports, Mr Lim is also an avid musician and photographer. Despite spending time on his diversified interests, Mr Lim was able to do well in his studies.

He will study Chemical Engineering at the National University of Singapore.

Mr Ng Yi Han
Hwa Chong Junior College (1997 - 1998)
The Chinese High School (1993 - 1996)

A keen reader, Mr Ng Yi Han expands his scope through reading a wide range of topics. The kind of reading materials he often chose consisted of publications on current affairs. His interest in current affairs gave him the opportunity to present his views at the "National Education Scenario Discussion" competition organised by his alma mater.

Mr Ng will be doing Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore.
