Each year, the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) and Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI)
receive numerous applications from individuals aspiring to become Deck Officers or Marine
Engineer Officers.
As part of the admissions process for Singapore Polytechnic, applicants for the SMA Diploma
in Nautical Studies programme were put through a selection panel formed by industry
representatives and SMA academic staff. This was held in February 2018 and the aspiring
young individuals were put through a series of tough questions to ensure that they were the
right fit for a seafaring career.
In March, applicants for the WMI Tripartite Nautical Training Award were also put through a
stringent selection process. These aspiring seafarers were first put through a psychometric
assessment, before being interviewed by the WMI course trainers. Similarly, tough questions
were asked to ensure that the candidates had the right aptitude and attitude for a seafaring
career. In addition, WMI also conducts Family Engagement session for every intake, in view of
earning the full support from their families as well as imparting the knowledge of what their
loved ones will be going through.
MPA would like to thank the shipping companies, SMA and WMI for the combined efforts in
training the next generation of seafarers. We wish these aspiring cadets fair winds and
