CELEBRATION OF WORLD OCEANS DAY GOES DIGITAL
On World Oceans Day (June 8), the Maritime and Port
Authority of Singapore (MPA) launched a digital campaign
to preserve the maritime environment in partnership with
various social media platforms. Our Little Playnest created a
sensory play tutorial through which children can learn how
marine debris has a devastating impact on our environment.
Rice Media published an article highlighting MPA’s coral
relocation project and conservation eff orts undertaken
during the development of Tuas Port. MustShareNews and
The Smart Local produced a stitched video that not only
showed the coral preservation effort, but also promoted
marine environment awareness in general. In addition,
social media posts were produced that shone a spotlight
on the colourful and varied marine life in and around
Singapore’s southern islands.

Recognising the importance of a clean marine environment to marine life, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)
continued to observe Marine Clean-up Day, despite the ongoing pandemic, during September. Discarded marine litter not
only pollutes land, but can also pollute water bodies and endanger the precious marine life in them. As such, MPA organised
a joint annual marine clean-up exercise with our partners and volunteers to remove marine debris and protect our marine
environment. Due to the COVID-19 situation, the initiative went online this year with virtual learning resources about marine
environmental protection.
