MPA trials roving e-kiosks to promote ferry safety

Ahoy there! You can now learn more about ferry safety before you depart!
From now till November, passengers can keep their eyes peeled for the roving e-kiosks across departure halls of regional ferry terminals in Singapore. This initiative is part of the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) Singapore Safety@Sea campaign's outreach efforts to inculcate safety awareness amongst public ferry passengers.
TSIB plays a key role in this function as it collaborates closely with stakeholders to determine the root cause of marine accidents and reviews safety actions taken by stakeholders. And when necessary, the bureau issues safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence.

Ferry safety should never be taken for granted

Despite efforts to promote ferry safety, reports of injuries are still prevalent - especially during embarkation / disembarkation of the ferries, or while the ferry is berthing. This three-month trial will serve as a testbed for the MPA to assess the effectiveness of educating the public in safety actions using interactive multimedia technology.
David Foo, Director of Operations Technology, MPA said, "Often, passengers place the responsibility of safety entirely on the ferry crew but really - safety is the responsibility of everyone. As our waterways become busier, it is essential to instil the importance of keeping safe while onboard and knowing how to react in times of emergency. Through the roving e-kiosks, we hope to engage the general public in some fun and games, while driving home the message of safety during this busy season."
The interactive safety kiosks will feature a three-minute animated video to educate passengers through a step-by-step three-tiered game to teach them on appropriate safety actions and highlight safety features of the ferries. Passengers can expect to learn about the dos and don'ts during boarding, when on onboard, and in an emergency.

Where to find us

The roving e-kiosks will complement the existing safety video on board the regional ferries and will be roving across three terminals for a month each. The kiosk is located at Marina South Pier during the Kusu pilgrimage (29 September to 27 October), Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and SCC HarbourFront for the year-end travel festivities. Passengers can also take part in the monthly lucky-draw and stand to win a prize sponsored by Association of Regional Ferry Operators.
