Singapore is one of the world's busiest ports and a leading international maritime centre. As the agency responsible for regulating and promoting the maritime sector, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) takes the lead in promoting good practices within the maritime community.
In 2011, MPA launched the Maritime Singapore Green Initiative (MSGI) and pledged to invest S$100 million to reduce the environmental impact of shipping and related activities, and to promote clean and green shipping in Singapore. The flagship programmes under MSGI include the Green Ship Programme, Green Port Programme and Green Tech Programme. The MPA Sustainability Office created in 2014 further drives other initiatives to encourage maritime
companies towards sustainable shipping. The MSGI was further expanded in 2016, with two new programmes. The Green Energy Programme aims to promote adoption of alternate or cleaner marine fuels as well as wider adoption of energy efficient operational measures. The Green Awareness Programme's objective is to create awareness on possible avenues towards
sustainable shipping.
The SEC-MPA Singapore Environmental Achievement Award (Maritime) serves to recognise maritime companies that are at the forefront of sustainability efforts. MPA's sponsorship is a reflection of our commitment in promoting a Clean and Green Maritime Singapore.
This year, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) won both the SEC-MPA SEAA (Maritime) and the CDL Outstanding SEAA, which is an overarching award that recognises the top performer amongst all the SEAA categories. The company has strong environmental systems and procedures, and sets clear environmental targets. OOCL has reduced its resource consumption across many environmental parameters and lowered its carbon emissions by 45 per cent, while the use of its solar panels has stopped 1,250 tonnes of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere. OOCL has adopted new environmentally-friendly designs for its vessels and uses innovative technology to reduce water and fuel consumption.
MPA aims to build a Future Ready Maritime Singapore that is competitive as it is sustainable.
