The Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) Forum 2022 was held on 17 November 2022 at the Parkroyal on Beach Road Grand Ballroom with over 250 guests from the SRS community. Themed Charting the next T.I.D.E (Talent, Innovation, Decarbonisation, Embracing Change), this year’s SRS Forum was about how the SRS community could chart their way forward in the face of uncertainty, brought about by global issues as we emerge from the pandemic.

Graced by our Chief Executive, Mr Teo Eng Dih of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), we celebrated many firsts this year.

First batch of 21 Sail Milestone Achievement Programme (SailMAP) recipients

In May 2022, the MPA, e2i, Singapore Shipping Association, Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union, and the Singapore organisation of Seamen announced the launch of SailMAP. The SailMAP incentives include a waiver of fees for the first examination attempt for the Certificate of Competency Class 3/5[1], a monthly allowance of S$1,000 while studying, and bonuses of up to S$10,000 on completion of each shipboard training milestone.

An inaugural batch of 21 seafarers were awarded the Sail Milestone Achievement Programme (SailMAP) financial incentives at the Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) Forum 2022.

First SRS event graced by our new Chief Executive (CE), Mr Teo Eng Dih

Mr Teo covered the key challenges which is in the heart of every maritime personnel today. Diving deeply into the topics of decarbonisation and green transition for international shipping, CE shared three suggestions. Firstly, by reducing energy consumption through internal reviews of energy use and by optimising route plans. Secondly, by designing newbuilds to cater for a decarbonised future. Thirdly, to use new maritime fuels such as biofuels, green ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen. CE also covered wide-ranging topics including Digitalisation, Cyber Resilience and shared that the SRS is the first ship registry globally to introduce notations for our registered vessels.

First ship registry to collaborate with RightShip to recognise the SRS “Green” notation

The SRS “Green” notation will be recognised by the world’s leading ship vetting company, RightShip. From 1 January 2023, RightShip will display the SRS “Green” notation on its environmental, social, and governance-focused digital maritime platform.

The inclusion of the SRS “Green” notation on Rightship’s digital maritime platform affirms the notation’s quality standards and will encourage more vessel owners to be accredited through implementing low-carbon energy-efficient solutions on their Singapore-flagged ships.

SRS Green Ship Programme (GSP) Certificates Presentation

Launched in 2011, the GSP is a programme under the Maritime Singapore Green Initiative. The GSP aims to reward ship owners who voluntarily adopt solutions that enable ships to exceed environmental regulatory standards set by the International Maritime Organization.

This year, a total of 29 Singapore-flagged ships from 17 companies received Green Ship certificates under the GSP for their efforts in reducing the environmental impact of their fleet, including using low-carbon fuels such as methanol and energy efficient technologies that enabled the ships to exceed the Energy Efficiency Design Index requirements mandated by the International Maritime Organization. Since 2011, a total of 666 ships have been recognised as green ships.

Exciting panel of speakers

We were also grateful to have the support of 6 speakers who covered a broad and diverse range of topics. The line-up of speakers even included Mr Malcolm Collins from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), who flew in from Australia to share with us his experience as port State control surveyor and highlighted what AMSA looked out for when conducting inspections.
