Dear Readers,
Welcome to the second issue of our Safety at Sea e-Bulletin!
This issue coincides with the Day of the Seafarer, which is held annually on the 25th of June. This year's campaign theme "I Am On Board with gender equality" recognises the importance and value of women within the professional ranks and takes cue from this year's World Maritime Day theme of "Empowering Women in the Maritime Community".
To commemorate Day of the Seafarer, our team has put together a special feature by inviting representatives from various shipping roles to share their thoughts on the significance of this event.
We have Sinanju Tankers' Celeste Yeong and Singapore Maritime Academy cadets Nurul Fazirah binte Muhamad Wafa and Joshua Jeevan Eliathamby - reflecting about their experiences out at sea. Capt. Atul Vatsa from Thome Ship Management, Capt. Hari Subramaniam from the Shipowners' Club, and Capt. Gavin Lim from the Sailors' Society - giving their perspectives on evergreen topics such as the focus on maritime safety, the human element in the safety culture and digital access for seafarers.
E-navigation is gaining in importance and acceptance as interest grows in smart and autonomous shipping, and the recent MOU by ICS, ASA, and ECSA may contribute to international standards and regulations. Read on to find out how efforts surrounding e-Navigation is taking shape.
Even as automation and new technologies becomes more prevalent in operational jobs, the human element remains a contributing factor to accidents. Hear straight from Transport Safety Investigation Bureau's (TSIB) Capt. Kunal Nakra, featured in this issue, stressing the importance of safety culture and highlighting TSIB's role in preventing marine accidents and incidents.
When an accident happens, every second matters. PSA Marine was awarded "Outstanding Contribution to Search and Rescue Efforts" in 2017 for reacting swiftly and in turn - saving a Chief Officer's life. Do read about PSA Marine's recount of the day's events.
For a knowledge booster, do you know that earliest recorded signs showed that floatation devices were made out of animal skins? Check out the info-graphic on the history of the lifejacket to see how the first lifejacket was invented and the differences between the lifejacket you would normally find on board a ferry, and the one you would use for sea sports.
Lastly, we are inviting nominations for the Safety at Sea Awards! Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to recognise the efforts of shipping companies and individuals who have contributed towards ensuring safer seas, the awards will be presented during the International Safety@Sea Week in Singapore from 26 to 30 August 2019. If you know of a deserving company and/or individual, please nominate them today.
Thank you once again and I hope you will enjoy this issue.
